Application in Divorce A complaint is served with a summons, so the defendant knows the particulars of the claim. Normally, the sheriff or a constable authorized to serve completes a proof of service that is entered into the record.

Normally the person serving the summons makes arrangements with the defendant to do this at a convenient time and place.
