In the event of an appeal, the record -- all the testimony and evidence used by the court to make it decision and judgment -- must be collected and prepared. This includes a word-for-word transcript of the case, which is very expensive, and in many cases an appeals lawyer replaces the original lawyer. The appeals lawyer puts in as many or more hours as the original lawyer.
In general, the appellant has 30 to 45 days to make the appeal, but this does not mean that the court has 30 to 45 days to return its decision about the appeal.
