Definition Quash - cancel or limit the scope of a procedure, such as discovery.
Application in Divorce In litigation, the respondent may move to quash the scope of discovery if he or she believes that the appellant is making an unreasonable request, such as one which is so sweeping that it puts an undue burden on the respondent. Discovery is not a fishing expedition. When the burden seems undue, a party can ask for a protective order to quash.

On other hand, sometimes respondents inundate an appellant with more information than he or she can digest and assimilate.

In large cases such as class action suits against large corporations, such as actions against the tobacco giants, the volume of information in discovery is measured by the box load.
