Definition Pension Valuation - the determination of a pension value by either the accrued method or the projected benefit method.

Application in Divorce In the accrued method of pension valuation, the plan is valued on the basis of what it has earned; in the projected benefit method, the future value of the plan is valued based on what it will be worth if accruals continue to be made.

As it applied to the distribution of property in a divorce, the accrued method and the projected benefit method produce different values that require the services of a financial planner to properly assess.

Pension valuations are done by an actuary who specializes in pension valuations.
