Definition Infant - a child who has not achieved a majority, usually 18 years of age.
Application in Divorce Also called a minor or unemancipated child.

Infant, children, child are terms describing a human below the age of 18, when he or she is generally said to have achieved a majority. Except for the consumption of alcohol, most states recognize 18 as the age of what is commonly called "adulthood."

In divorce actions, an infant is not considered legally competent, and his or her well being may require the appointment of a guardian ad litem.

In some actions, an attorney for the child(ren) may also enter the case.

See Guardian Ad Litem ; Attorney for the Child(ren); Majority; Emancipation.
