Definition Comity - courtesy, and the judicial doctrine that states respect the orders, decrees and judgment of other jurisdictions.

Application in Divorce As it applies to divorce, this means states respect each other’s divorce decrees.

This becomes very critical when if comes to custody orders. Once a custody award is put in place in a certain state, the custody order and any future modifications to that order must be done through that court unless the actual custody order is transferred from one jurisdiction to another with proper court procedure. A jurisdiction will respect the ruling of the other jurisdiction where the existing custody order is in place.
