Definition Champus - Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services.
Application in Divorce CHAMPUS benefits the civilian spouse in a military marriage that ends in divorce.

CHAMPUS provides authorized in-patient and out-patient care from civilian sources, on a cost-sharing basis.  Retired military are eligible, as well as dependents of active-duty, retired and deceased military.  Contact a Health Benefits Advisor at any of the major commands in the Washington area (clinic or hospital) for the most up-to-date information on program details.

In a divorce ending a marriage of twenty years or more, the nonmilitary spouse of a military person has rights to continuing medical care under CHAMPUS. However, the guidelines are very restrictive, and CHAMPUS coverage protects spouses of career military personnel, not a spouse married to a single- or double-enlistment military person.
