Definition Blood Test - process by which the claimed father, mother, and child have blood drawn and tested to determine whether the man is the biological father of the child.

Application in Divorce Since the obligations for a person to support a child are limited to those that are biological or legally adopted, determining paternity is one of the first steps that must take place before the court will order a support or custodial and visitation rights. Keep in mind this typically only takes place when the paternity of the child is in question by one or both of the divorcing parties. The court will order that a paternity test be done by an independent third party genetic testing company. The method of determining paternity by testing the blood has decreased in popularity over the years due to newer methods being introduced in the industry, such a DNA swab testing.

Blood Test vs Swab test
DNA paternity testing has become inexpensive and conclusive. Due to technological advances, a DNA paternity test can now be completed within a few days and the samples can be taken in the privacy of your own home. DNA samples are no longer normally obtained by blood samples, but by buccal swabs of the cheek cells in your mouth. This method can be accomplished on anyone regardless of age.
