Definition Bigamy - a criminal offense committed when one spouse enters a marriage when the previous marriage has not been terminated.
Application in Divorce Bigamy is an illegal act. It is punishable by state law and is interpreted by the courts as an act of deception or fraud. Bigamy happens when one person marries again while currently married to another spouse. Technically the second marriage is null or void, which is why bigamy is an appropriate ground for a legal annulment, and if granted will acknowledge that the marriage never actually took place.
