Application in Divorce An application is typically a case information sheet, used by the clerks to manage filings and the initial Petition or Complaint. By filing the Petition or Complaint a spouse is starting the divorce. Certain states have standardized documents and others are free-form, but either way asking the court for a divorce is not as simple as completing a request by submitting an application.

Asking the court for a divorce is far more complex that completing an application for a marriage license.
